Description
Hannah Pickard House, located on Cottingham Road in Kingston upon Hull, is a former orphanage designed by W.H. Bingley and built in 1895, funded by Hannah Pickard. The building is constructed of yellow brick with ashlar dressings and features gabled and hipped slate roofs, along with two side wall stacks, one ridge stack, and two gable stacks.
The exterior includes a plinth, a lintel band, and a first-floor band. It is two storeys high with a six-window range. The main section has a projecting center flanked by two gabled rear wings. The windows are primarily plain sashes. The canted projecting center features two windows and a commemorative plaque with a gabled hoodmould between them. Each return angle has a single window, and beyond that, there are two windows on either side. The lower section has three central windows, with a window to the left and a half-glazed door with an overlight to the right in the return angles. The side gables each have two windows on both floors.
Historically, this complex of orphan homes and ancillary buildings was constructed between 1895 and 1902 by the Port of Hull Society, which was founded in 1821. The society established the Sailors’ Orphans Institution in 1836, but it did not have a permanent home until the Park Street orphanage was built in 1868-1869, largely funded by Sir Titus Salt. The Park Street orphanage was sold in 1897, by which time all the children had moved to the new complex on Cottingham Road.
