Description
Sidmouth Street School East Block is a primary school built between 1911 and 1912 by Joseph H. Hirst, the City Architect. The building features red brick with ashlar dressings and has hipped and gabled slate roofs, designed in an early 18th-century style. It stands two to three storeys high and has a square plan with central recesses on the north and south sides. The windows are primarily glazing bar sashes, with those on the first floor adorned with moulded lintels and keystones.
The west front, facing the playground, showcases polychrome quoins, a moulded first-floor sill band, and a dentillated cornice. This elevation has two storeys and a ten-window range. The centre features six 28-pane sashes above and six similar windows below, both with plain lintels. The slightly projecting end pavilions are topped with large dentillated semicircular pediments that contain round windows and festoons. The left pavilion includes a 28-pane sash above and a 16-pane fixed light below, while the right pavilion has three 28-pane sashes on each floor.
The left return, facing north, has a central recess with a segment-headed tripartite glazing bar sash, flanked by single 18-pane sashes. Above this is a gable with a round louvred opening and festoons. Below, there is another tripartite sash flanked by 18-pane sashes, along with a full-width flat-roofed projection featuring three segment-headed barred windows. The right end pavilion mirrors the left with three 28-pane sashes on each floor, while the left side features a hipped range with a side wall stack and no quoins, containing four 28-pane sashes and a moulded round-arched entrance with a keystone. Above the entrance are three round windows.
The right return, facing south, has a late 20th-century single-storey flat-roofed addition at the centre and left pavilion. The left pavilion has a 24-pane sash on each floor to the right, while the right wing also features three 28-pane sashes on each floor.
