Description

The building is a school located on John Knox Road in Longniddry, dating from around 1905. It is a long, single-storey structure featuring Classical details. The design is symmetrical, with a central three-bay gable that has pilasters and a pediment, flanked by five-bay wings that lead to three-bay advanced pavilions at either end. The exterior is constructed of stugged, coursed ashlar, with squared and snecked stone on the sides and rear, and polished ashlar dressings. Notable features include a battered base course, a moulded cill course, and an eaves course. The windows are bipartite with stone mullions, and some break the eaves in consoled pediments.

On the south elevation, the central, advanced three-bay gable is subdivided by pilasters and features a round-arched, tripartite main entrance with a six-panelled door, flanked by round-headed bipartite windows, all adorned with radiating fanlights. There is a frieze and cornice, and the pediment contains a blank plaque flanked by pilasters. A clock-tower cupola sits on the roof ridge behind, made of timber and lead, with an ogee roof and weathervane. The slightly lower wings on either side have alternate windows designed as pedimented bipartites. A flat-roofed porch connects to the outer bays of the pavilions, designated for boys and girls, featuring round-arched windows at the front and doors on the return.

The east and west elevations show a single pedimented bay for the pavilions and a three-bay, recessed main block with a central pedimented bay. A two-storey hall projects to the north, featuring tall round-arched windows. At the rear, there are modern harled classroom blocks. The windows are sash and case, with a glazing pattern of 12 and 8 panes. The roof is covered with Westmorland slates, featuring piended and platformed sections, with swept eaves and corniced ashlar stacks.
