Description

The former Frederick Street School, now the Frederick Street Business Centre, is a three-storey building constructed in 1905. It features a double-height ground floor and has a symmetrical Classical design with twelve bays. Notable architectural elements include a rooftop playground and two distinctive stair towers with canted bays that are parapetted and domed, rising above the roof level. The exterior is finished in grey granite ashlar with Aberdeen bonding, featuring rock-faced stone at the ground level and rubble at the rear. Doric pilasters separate the bays starting from the first storey, and there is a high granite parapet with large railed openings, including pedimented sections on the outer bays of the southern elevation.

The building has predominantly non-traditional replacement windows with three, four, and five panes, as well as nine-pane circular windows on the third storey of the stair towers. It has gable stacks and a flat roof.

The boundary wall to the south is low, constructed in Aberdeen bond with a coped top, and features two pairs of square-plan ashlar gatepiers on either side, each topped with shallow pyramidal caps.

Inside, the original layout is partially preserved, with corridors leading to former classrooms on the upper floors, some of which have been altered. There are some timber doorframes, a pair of dog-leg staircases with iron balusters and timber banisters, and simple cornicing in certain areas.
