Description
Pool School is a former Board school built in 1896. It is constructed of granite rubble with grey granite dressings and features a slate roof with granite coping on the gables and red clay crested ridge tiles. The building has white brick axial stacks topped with granite cornices.
The school is a long, single-storey structure with a symmetrical layout. It has gabled classrooms that are positioned at right angles, with entrances located in recessed blocks to the right and left of the center, and a longitudinal range at the rear. The architectural style is Free Jacobean.
The exterior showcases a symmetrical front with five bays, arranged as 1:1:2:1:1, featuring flanking gables and a pair of projecting gables at the center. Between these gables is a granite pedimented bellcote, which is dated, and an inscription panel. The hipped-roof ranges on either side of the center have dormers and doorways. The gables are adorned with large 4- and 5-light granite mullion/transom windows that have small panes and stepped heads, all under hoodmoulds, with ventilation slits located in the gables. At the rear, there are three small gables above tall narrow windows.
Inside, the classrooms have 20th-century suspended ceilings that conceal the original roof structures.
