Description

6 Abergeldie Road is a former school and pair of schoolhouses built in 1877, with some additions from the 20th century. The building is single storey with an irregular plan and constructed from coursed, pinned pink and grey granite, featuring a base course and raised coped skews with skewputts.

On the south elevation, the schoolhouses are located in the outer bays. The left schoolhouse is a two-storey, three-bay structure with a later single storey and attic addition to the left. The right schoolhouse is also a two-storey, three-bay building. Both have pedimented dormerheads that break the eaves and advanced gables. The schoolhouses are connected by a lower single storey, four-bay section that forms the entrances for boys and girls, featuring a pair of entrance doors with pedimented gableheads and distinctive 9-pane glazed gently pointed fanlights.

Attached to the rear right is a single storey, three-bay gothic schoolroom with a gabled bellcote and bell positioned at the mid roofline on the east gable. This section includes some bipartite and tripartite Y-tracery timber windows. To the rear left, there is a five-bay single storey classroom range with gothic window openings and pedimented gableheads that also break the eaves.

At the rear, a single storey linking corridor connects to a square double height classroom building with a half-piended roof and large paired windows. The building features a variety of window types, including four-pane timber sash and case windows in the houses, large timber six over nine-pane sash and case windows in the square classroom, and large timber transomed and mullioned multi-paned fixed windows, some with top opening panes in other rooms. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are gable and wallhead stacks with canted coping.

The interior has been extensively modernised, with one double height classroom featuring dado rail pine panelling.

The boundary wall is low rubble granite to the south with saddleback coping and interspersed with gabled piers. The east and west sides have high granite rubble walls with rubble saddleback coping.
