Description
St Nathalian's Church, located on Golf Road in Ballater, was designed by Archibald Macpherson in 1905. This aisleless Scots Gothic church features an attached single-storey and attic presbytery to the south. The northwest entrance is marked by a gabled porch. The church has a prominent three-sided canted apse on the east side, which includes a central upper-level niche that holds a carved stone statue of St Nathalan. The building is characterized by a steeply stepped base course, a grey granite stepped and pinnacled parapet, and pink squared and snecked rock-faced granite with grey granite dressings. It is set back from the road within its own spacious grounds.
The west end of the church has two hoodmoulded geometric windows with a circular window above. The presbytery predominantly features timber four-pane casement windows, with some bipartite windows that have granite central mullions. The roof is covered with grey graded slate, and there are two lateral wallhead stacks on the south side.
Inside, the church retains a largely original simple whitewashed interior with an open timber ceiling. The nave includes small north and south transepts. The sanctuary and transepts are adorned with timber dado panelling, and there are timber pews, an altar, and a pulpit. A raised timber gallery is located at the west end, and the west end window features simple coloured glass with a fleur-de-lis motif. The presbytery maintains a largely original floor plan, with timber shutters and chimneypieces, and predominantly four-panel timber doors.
The boundary walls to the east, south, and west are constructed of rubble granite with rubble coping. Square gatepiers to the east are topped with saddleback coping.
