Description

The former school, built in 1874, is a board school that includes yard walls, gate piers, and gates. It is constructed from Killas rubble with granite dressings and features an asbestos slate roof with gable-ended wings at the front. The building has a U-shaped plan, with the principal schoolroom in the main range and large classrooms in each of the projecting wings. The principal entrance is through a porch located in the left-hand angle, leading to an entrance lobby, with another porch in the opposite angle. The design incorporates Gothic style elements.

The exterior is single-storey and largely unaltered, except for a small 20th-century porch and extension between the porches, which partially obscures the principal central hall window opening. The left-hand porch has a 4-centred arched doorway, while the right-hand porch features a 2-light transomed window. The gable ends of the classroom wings project at both sides, each adorned with a central 3-light traceried granite mullioned window and a hoodmould. The other elevations have original wooden 3-light windows with transoms.

Surrounding the school playground are rubble coped walls on all four sides. The central part of the front wall includes a wide gateway with rectangular gate piers flanked by low walls. The round-headed granite gate piers are monolithic, with dressed granite copings on the low walls and a 20th-century concrete screen replacing the original railings above. The gates, likely original, are wrought iron with looped bars. The interior has not been inspected.
