Description

The building is a former school, dating to around 1874. It includes front and rear courtyard walls, railings, and a gate. Constructed of coursed dressed Killas stone with granite dressings, it features a dry Delabole slate roof with gable ends to the main roofs and half-hipped ends to the secondary roofs. Lateral stacks are present, with some featuring diagonally-set brick shafts. The building is arranged around an overall U-shaped plan, with shorter wings projecting into the courtyard from the ranges on the left and right sides. The main range contains the schoolroom or hall; the other ranges house the classrooms. The principal entrance is located in a porch situated in the right-hand inner angle. The design incorporates Gothic style details.

The building is single-storied with virtually unaltered elevations. A chamfered granite weathering is visible on the high plinth. The main window openings are 4-light mullioned windows with traceried heads and relieving arches. Most other windows are 3-light mullioned with transoms. The south-south-east facing front of the hall incorporates a central gable with a 4-light traceried window flanked by 3-light windows. A tall, octagonal bellcote with a spire sits above the angle between the main roof and the classroom range projecting from the left side. A porch with a 4-centred doorway is located in the angle between the hall range and the classroom range on the right side.

Inside, the majority of the original panelled doors, dado panelling (vertical tongued and grooved boards), and wooden floors remain. The original roof structure is stated to be well-detailed, though it is mostly concealed by 20th-century acoustic ceilings. Killas stone walls enclose a rectangular courtyard at the front. High retaining walls enclose a shallow courtyard at the rear. These walls are topped with granite coping and original cast-iron railings with arrowhead finials, and feature original cross-braced cast-iron gates.
