Description
The Coastguards Rocket House, built in 1893, is a coastguard station located on British Road in St Agnes. It is constructed of coursed killas with granite dressings and features a dry Delabole slate roof with projecting verges at the gable ends and exposed rafter ends beneath the eaves. The building has a rectangular plan, with a carriage house on the ground floor and a workroom above, which is accessed by a single flight of stone steps on the left.
The structure is two storeys high with unaltered elevations, retaining its original doors and windows. The symmetrical northeast gable end showcases a wide central 4-centred arched doorway with a hoodmould and a 3-light canted oriel window above it. The left-hand side wall presents a two-window entrance front, featuring a central first-floor doorway with a ledged door and 12-pane horned sash windows. A mid-floor string runs along the facade, and there is a window on the ground floor to the left of the stone steps, with no window on the right. The steps, approached from the right, have a solid stone balustrade on the outer side and an original iron handrail on the inner side. Beneath the right-hand side of the steps is a 4-centred arched niche, likely used for a former water pump. The interior has not been inspected.
