Description
Coastguard Cottage is a house that was formerly used for coastguard purposes, dating from the 18th century. It is built of stone rubble with granite quoins, and part of the exterior is painted. The roof is thatched with wheat reed and features brick chimneys at the gable ends. The building has an L-shaped layout with three rooms: a kitchen with a large hearth on the left, an unheated service room on the right, and a parlour that projects at right angles in front. A doorway near the angle to the right of the kitchen leads into a lobby that provides access to the three rooms and a straight flight stair located behind the parlour. There is an additional doorway on the right-hand wall of the service room.
The cottage is two storeys high and has a regular east front with one window, while the parlour wing projects at right angles with one window on the south front. The doorway near the angle with the parlour features the original 18th-century four-panel door, which is ledged on the inside. The east front has 12-pane horizontal sliding sashes, and the parlour front has 12-pane hornless sashes. The gable ends include small 'look out' windows that were used by the coastguards.
The interior of the cottage is virtually unaltered, featuring Bowtell moulded beams in the kitchen and a fielded-panel two-panel door leading into the parlour. The first floor and parlour have not been inspected. The cottage served as a coastguard house until the late 19th century and remains a virtually complete example of an 18th-century coastguard house.
