Description
Solent View is a former coastguard officers' house, dating from 1882 and built in the Gothic style. Constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with red brick lintels, stone dressings, and a slate roof, the building features four brick chimneystacks. The plan is of a detached, square two-story structure with three windows facing the front and two windows on each side. The windows are pointed-arch sash windows, featuring horns but without glazing bars. The front, or northwest, elevation has a single sash window on the first floor, centrally positioned, flanked by paired sash windows. On the ground floor, a central pointed-headed doorcase is accompanied by a paired pointed-arch window to the right and a square bay with three pointed-headed sashes to the left. Gable ends include kneelers and semi-external chimneystacks, with single or paired windows to the side elevations. The rear elevation has two gables with kneelers and chimneystacks along the ridges. The building remains largely unaltered and is part of a group that includes coastguard cottages, a former washhouse, and a boathouse associated with the coastguard station.
