Description
Clare Lallow's Grid Iron Yard is a former seaplane factory, now a boatyard, built around 1912 to 1913. The building is constructed of red brick in English bond, with some corners in part header bond. It features wide wooden eaves and a hipped roof that is currently covered in corrugated iron sheeting.
On the south side, there are two cambered door surrounds with rectangular fanlights, plank doors, and a large three-light casement window. The west side has three cambered arches and cambered doorcases. The east side is notable for six large three-light casements with wooden frames and concrete lintels, one of which is blocked. The north side, facing the River Medina, has four large wooden plank doors and an iron slipway.
Inside, the building boasts a scientific kingpost roof with through purlins. It was originally built for the firm J S White & Co for the construction of seaplanes, with the first seaplane launched in May 1913. Production later moved to west Cowes. This site is included as a very early seaplane factory and is referenced in the Guide to Industrial Archaeology of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight by Dr Edwin Course of Southampton University.
