Description
The Church of St James is located in East Cowes and is a Grade II listed building. The west tower, designed by John Nash, is the only part of the church from that period, with its foundation stone laid by Princess Victoria in September 1831. The rest of the church was rebuilt in 1868 by T Hellyer. It is constructed of stone rubble and has a tiled roof. The west tower features pointed and quatrefoil windows, along with a low stair turret on the north side. The church has a four-bay nave with a clerestorey and north and south aisles, which include a wooden gallery in part. Inside, there are columns in the Italian Romanesque style. John Nash, who passed away in 1835, is buried in the churchyard, and his tomb is located at the angle of the tower and the west end of the south aisle of the nave. The church is primarily listed for its connections with Nash.
