Description
The Dennis is a former vicarage built in the early 19th century. It features a stucco exterior with a plinth, a mid-floor string course, an eaves cornice, and rusticated quoin strips. The roof is hipped and covered with scantle slate, boasting projecting eaves and four brick chimneys positioned over the side walls. The building has an overall L-shaped plan, with a main double-depth range that is two rooms wide, and a service wing extending at right angles to the rear right.
At the front, there are two equal reception rooms that overlook the garden. The entrance is located on the left side wall, leading to a passage behind the left-hand room that connects to a central rear stair hall. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window south front, featuring original 16-pane hornless sash windows on the first floor. The ground floor has early 20th-century French windows with lowered sills. Between these windows is an original semi-circular, half-dome headed stucco niche. The entrance doorway, slightly left of the center on the west wall, includes an original six-panel door with an overlight that has looped glazing bars.
The interior has been partly inspected and appears to be largely intact, showcasing plaster ceiling cornices and bands in the reception rooms, as well as an open-well open-string stair with stick balusters and a mahogany handrail. This style of garden front plan was quite popular for vicarages in the early 19th century.
