Description

Blackwater County Primary School is a board school built in 1877, with an extension added in the later 19th century. The building is faced with killas, features elvan dressings, and has granite quoins. The roof is primarily covered with asbestos slate, except for the extension which uses dry Delabole slate. The school has gabled roofs and two old conically-capped ventilators, along with a stone lateral stack that has brick shafts.

The original structure has a U-shaped plan, likely with the main schoolroom (hall) in the central range, flanked by entrance lobbies on either side, and a classroom wing at each end that projects forward at the front. The principal entrance features a porch located in the left-hand inner angle. A classroom wing was added to the left of the original left-hand wing in the later 19th century, showcasing Gothic style details.

The exterior is a single storey with unaltered elevations that retain the original doors. It includes original wooden mullioned windows with hoodmoulds. The southeast front has a gable end that projects forward on the left and a gable end of the cross wing that projects forward on the right. Each of these gables features a three-light traceried window. The porch in the left-hand angle has a Y-traceried two-light window at the front and a pointed-arched doorway on its right side. There is also a three-light window with pointed-arched lights to the right of the middle, which has a date plaque in the gable above it, and a pointed-arched doorway with a traceried overlight located near the right angle. The later extension on the left includes a three-light pointed-arched window under a gable at the front on its right. The interior has not been inspected.
