Description
The war memorial located outside the Blackwater Literary Institute was unveiled in 1921. It features a cross made of dressed granite in the Celtic style, with a pierced wheel-head cross on a tapered shaft adorned with Celtic knotwork decorative panels. The cross shaft rests on a tapering base that lists the names of those who died in the First World War and those who returned. The inscription on the southwest face reads: "THOSE WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE 1914-1919," followed by a list of nine names. The northwest face states: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOUR OF THE BLACKWATER AND DISTRICT MEN WHO SERVED THEIR KING AND COUNTRY 1914-1919," along with the first part of the names list, which continues on the other faces. The base is set on a two-stepped plinth, with the upper southwest-facing side inscribed: "ALSO IN LOVING MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE 1939-1945 WAR," listing eight men who were killed in action. Surrounding the lower plinth are eight low granite posts that support a chain. This memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the local community's losses during war and is positioned near a Grade II Listed Building, highlighting its historical and architectural significance.
