Description
The South Molton War Memorial is a war memorial cross built in 1921. It is made from roughly-hewn grey granite and is located in the forecourt of the town cemetery, aligned with the central axis of the burial ground.
The memorial features a Celtic cross with a tapering square shaft that stands on a tapering plinth and an octagonal base consisting of three steps. The head of the cross is adorned with a relief moulding of an interweaving Celtic pattern.
On the north face of the plinth, the main inscription is in leaded lettering and reads: ‘IN GRATEFUL / REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE / FROM THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS”’. The other faces of the plinth list the 47 names of the fallen soldiers.
Additionally, there is a rectangular stone tablet at the foot of the memorial that commemorates those who died in the Second World War, inscribed with the years 1939-1945 and listing 23 names.
