Description

The Thurlestone War Memorial is a war memorial cross built in 1921, made from grey granite. It is prominently located on the village green. The memorial features a plain Latin cross atop a tapering octagonal shaft, which stands on a square plinth with a substantial four-stepped square base.

The main inscription, crafted in leaded lettering, is found on the north-east face of the plinth. It reads: ‘IN GRATEFUL MEMORY / OF / THE MEN OF THIS / PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR / LIVES FOR US DURING THE GREAT WAR / 1914 TO 1918’, and includes the names of 12 fallen parishioners on the upper step of the base. An additional inscription on the south-east face notes ‘1939-1945’, followed by the names of 11 more individuals.
