Description

This is a pair of cottages located in Thurlestone village, likely dating to the late 17th or early 18th century. The cottages are constructed of plastered rubble and cob walls, with a thatched gable roof. A rubble axial stack features a brick shaft, and a separate brick stack is located at the right gable end. Just-a-Cottage originally had a single-room plan, with a passageway running underneath the left-hand end of the house to the rear. Trethurl has a two-room plan. The front elevation is asymmetrical, with a 2:3 window arrangement. Most windows are 19th-century, featuring small panes, although a 20th-century window is present at the centre of Trethurl on the first floor. A 20th-century stable-type door leads to Just-a-Cottage, with an opening providing access to the passageway on its left. Trethurl has a 19th-century plank door situated to the right of the centre. The interior was inaccessible during the survey, but the generally unspoiled exterior suggests the cottages may be relatively unaltered. Group Value: The cottages contribute significantly to the character and appearance of the surrounding area.
