Description

Vine Cottage and Village Stores is a pair of cottages and village shops, likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century, although there is no definitive evidence for the exact date. A fire in the 20th century required some rebuilding. The structure features rendered rubble walls and a thatched roof, which is hipped at the left end and gabled at the right. There is a projecting rendered rubble stack with a brick shaft at the left end, along with two axial brick stacks.

Originally, there were three cottages: Vine Cottage on the left, which has a one-room plan, and two others with a two-room plan, the right-hand one likely constructed later and currently used as a shop. The building is two storeys high with an asymmetrical six-window front. Vine Cottage has an early 20th-century four-pane sash window on each floor, with a contemporary panelled and glazed door to the right, sheltered by a slate hood. The central cottage has 20th-century two-light casements and a 19th-century small-paned window at the centre on the first floor, with a 20th-century stable-type door below, also under a slate hood. The shop features 20th-century two and three-light small-paned casements and a doorway at its right-hand end. The interior of the central cottage is the only part accessible and does not contain any early features.
