Description
Thatchways is a pair of cottages that were originally one house, dating from the early 17th century, with a possible addition from the 19th century. The building features rendered rubble and cob walls, topped with a gable-ended thatched roof. There are three rendered rubble stacks: one at each end and one lateral stack at the front. The original plan was a three-room end-through-passage layout, although the passage has since been removed and its exact position is now uncertain. The hall is heated by a fireplace located on the front wall, which has a projecting window bay next to it. Inside, the hall includes an open fireplace with a chamfered slate lintel and dressed rubble jambs, as well as a chamfered ceiling beam. Although the roof timbers were not inspected, a jointed cruck is noted in Dr. N. Alcock's 'Cruck Catalogue'.
