Description
The Public Market and Assembly Room, formerly known as the Market House, was built in 1863 and designed by architect W. F. Cross from Exeter. This two-storey building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof. It has a moulded cornice and a parapet adorned with balustrading.
On the first floor, there are three cambered headed windows with moulded architraves, keystones, and two oculi. The central window has a curved pediment. The ground floor is rusticated and includes three round-headed arches, each with ram's head keystones, which provide access to the Pannier Market.
The first floor houses the New Assembly Room, which boasts a cast iron and glazed ceiling, gilded brackets, and two fireplaces with attractive Victorian cast iron grates. An inscription on the facade reads, "Erected AD 1863. J E JACKSON Esq. MAYOR."
