Description
The Ixworth War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1919, with additional inscriptions added after the Second World War. It stands approximately 3.3 meters tall in a prominent location to the south-east of the Church of St Mary, which is a Grade I listed building.
The memorial is made of granite and features a wheel-head cross that rises from a tapering shaft, which is set on a chamfered plinth composed of two sections and a two-stepped square base. The main inscription, painted in black lettering on the front face of the plinth, reads: "TO THE/ GREATER GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918/ 'THE MEN WERE VERY GOOD UNTO US, AND/ WE WERE NOT HURT... THEY WERE A WALL/ UNTO US BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY'/ SAMUEL XXV, 15 AND 16/ AND/ 1939-1945."
The names of the fallen from the First World War are inscribed on the south-west and north-east faces, while those who died in the Second World War are listed on the lower front section of the plinth. The memorial is enclosed by chain-link fencing and slender metal posts topped with ball finials.
