Description
The Whitbourne War Memorial is a roadside war memorial dating from around 1920. It features a rough hewn granite stone cross and shaft set upon a tapering plinth. The cross head is designed in the style of a Celtic wheel cross, and there is an incised sword of sacrifice on the front face. The inscriptions on the plinth are in black painted lettering. The south face (front) reads: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF/THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO SERVED IN THE/GREAT WAR 1914-1919/THOSE WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE," followed by a list of names of those who fell in the Second World War. The sides and rear contain a list of names of those who served in the War. This simple granite cross serves as a significant monument within the village of Meadow Green, commemorating the men of the parish of Whitbourne who served in the First World War.
