Description
The Gunpowder Magazine at Robinson's Shaft is a 19th-century structure built to store gunpowder. It features a circular magazine surrounded by a blast wall, both made from uncoursed granite rubble. The walls were originally flush pointed with cement and have entrances facing west. The blast wall reaches a height of up to 2 meters and includes half-height granite door jambs and fittings for a small gate. The magazine wall stands up to 1.8 meters high and is currently unroofed.
Constructed in the 1860s, this magazine was intended to serve the nearby Palmer's and Bickford's shafts, located about 250 meters to the east. The magazine likely ceased operations in 1900 when Robinson's Shaft was established, but it may have continued to be used for storage until the roof was removed in the early 1990s.
Despite the loss of its roof, the Gunpowder Magazine is notable for its large size and circular design, which is uncommon compared to the typical rectangular form of such buildings. It is situated within a historically significant industrial landscape designated as a World Heritage Site and is part of the important Robinson's Shaft mining complex.
