Description

The boiler house, located immediately to the north-east of the pump engine house at Robinson's Shaft in South Crofty Mine, was likely built in 1903 and has undergone alterations and extensions since then. It is constructed from uncoursed killas rubble, with some areas patched in concrete block. The windows feature brick arches, and the east range has a corrugated sheet roof while the west range has a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan with parallel ranges aligned on a north-south axis, with the pumping engine house attached to the south.

The east range is one-and-a-half storeys tall and approximately three bays wide. It has large garage doors inserted in the second bay, replacing a former semicircular arch, and there are blocked semicircular arches to the left and right, with one containing a doorway. Above, there are remnants of two of the original three round-headed windows. The single-storey west elevation retains two round-arched sash windows with glazing bars. Inside, the boiler house features softwood trusses.

Despite some modifications, this boiler house is part of an important group of early 20th-century buildings surrounding Robinson's Shaft. The continued mining activity in the Camborne/Redruth area into the 20th century has resulted in well-preserved complexes that represent significant aspects of the mining industry, which have not survived in other, more altered contexts. This section of South Crofty Mine was reorganized between 1900 and 1908, and the current buildings reflect the state of the mine as it was by 1914, following the loss of the miners' dry built between 1903 and 1906 to the south. The steam engine was relocated here from Tregurtha Downs and the site includes paired engine houses for pumping and winding, a compressor house with its chimney, and extensive workshop facilities for the mine.
