Description
St Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral, located on King Street in Aberdeen, was designed by Archibald Simpson and built between 1816 and 1817, with the chancel added by G E Street in 1880 and a porch by Sir R S Lorimer in 1911. The interior was completed by Sir Ninian Comper from 1936 to 1943. This Perpendicular Gothic cathedral features a nave with flanking aisles and is prominently situated on King Street. The western elevation is constructed of sandstone ashlar, while the rear is made of snecked granite rubble. The building showcases deep-set, pointed-arched windows with transomed and mullioned tracery, as well as a striking 3-stage crocketted spirelet with finials.
The entrance elevation is symmetrical with three bays, featuring a taller central bay that includes a large, intricate 4-light tracery window. The low entrance porch, designed by Lorimer in 1911, has a tracery window and is positioned at the re-entrant angle. The central bay is flanked by two large engaged spirelets that rise from the ground, with smaller spirelets at the corners of the outer bays. The central bay has a pierced parapet, while the outer bays are castellated.
The cathedral predominantly features 2, 3, and 4-light tracery windows, some of which contain stained glass. The roof is covered with grey slate.
Inside, the decorative scheme by Sir Ninian Comper remains largely intact. The nave has six bays with white-painted pointed-arched arcades, side aisles, and chapels. The vaulted ceiling is adorned with decorative panels that depict the arms of 48 states in America and local families. The chancel includes a large, decorative gold-painted baldachino and a carved oak screen. The interior also features high-quality stained glass windows, including one by Comper that depicts Christ in Majesty, along with timber pews and intricately carved timber choir stalls.
