Description

The former Episcopalian School, designed by Alexander Ellis and dated 1865, is a two-storey, six-bay building with a roughly T-plan layout. It is located behind King Street, adjacent to St Andrews Cathedral. The exterior features coursed and snecked granite rubble, with dry dash finishes on the east and south sides. There is a later, lower extension added in the 20th century at the southeast re-entrant angle.

The north elevation includes a six-panel timber entrance door on the far left, topped by a tall four-light fanlight. A central commemorative plaque is present, along with a decorative date plaque below it. The building predominantly has 24-pane timber windows, characterized by prominent timber mullions and transoms on the ground floor. The upper storey features bipartite, round-arched multi-pane casement windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods, along with coped gable and ridge stacks, as well as coped skews and skew-putts.

Inside, the original room layout remains largely intact, consisting of two large rooms with an open-frame timber roof. There are some Classical-style fire surrounds, timber flooring, and a timber dog-leg stair. The interior also features timber dado panelling, two and four-panel timber doors, and some smaller rooms separated by glass and timber screens.
