Description
St Andrew's School is a school building constructed in 1866, likely serving as both a church and school before the church was built. The building is made of coursed sandstone rubble and features a slate roof in a Gothic style, characterized by steeply pitched roofs. It has an asymmetrical T-plan, consisting of an 8-bay main range oriented east-west, with a long south wing attached to the second bay. The building is single storey.
Both gables of the main range have large, 2-centred arched, 3-light windows with circular tracery, hood-moulds with figured stops, and a polychrome arch-band. Each gable also features a small spherical-triangle in the apex and gable coping with an apex cross. On the north side of the main range, there are square-headed, 2-light windows with double-chamfered surrounds and shouldered lights, along with a doorway with an overlight, all having linked hood-moulds. The south side includes a shouldered doorway with a chamfered surround located in the bay west of the wing, and four windows to the east, similar to those on the north side, one of which has a doorway breaking into its lower right corner. The south wing has four similar 2-light windows, a shouldered doorway between the third and fourth windows, and a chimney on the west slope of the gable. The interior has not been inspected. The building forms a group with the Church of St Andrew, which adds to its significance.
