Description
The former stable block to Stanley Mill, built around 1891, is now used as a garage. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble, with the rear wall made of glazed red brick and a slate roof. The building has a U-shaped plan, featuring a main range with projecting wings and a forecourt that is enclosed by a screen wall with a wide gateway on the right side.
The stable block is mostly single storey and has a four-window main range with a doorway located between the third and fourth windows. The left wing has a gable with a square wagon doorway that has a keyed lintel and is currently fitted with a roller-blind door. The right wing is one and a half storeys tall, featuring a gabled dormer on the re-entrant side, which includes a loading door and a crane jib, along with a square window in the gable topped with a lunette.
The right gable end of the main range features a nearly full-width wagon entrance with a cast-iron I-beam lintel and three sets of sliding doors. The interior has not been inspected. This building is a rare example of a purpose-built mill stable range and is included for its group value with the associated Stanley Mill on Shackleton Street.
