Description

Sandy Holme Aqueduct in Thompson Park is a canal aqueduct built around 1790 to 1796 for the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Company, designed by engineer Robert Whitworth. It is constructed from dressed sandstone blocks, with the lower half featuring rusticated and rock-faced stone with random punching. The aqueduct has two horseshoe arches; the southern arch spans the River Brun, while the other arch crosses a footpath. Above the arches is a broad band, with the retaining wall slightly set back and another band above it. The structure is topped with coped parapets and has sloped concave abutment walls that include rectangular terminal piers.
