Description
A pair of small town houses, dating from approximately 1820 to 1835, and altered subsequently. The houses are located on Church Street, Burnley, and form a group with numbers 83 to 87 to the right. Number 89 is currently an antique shop, and number 91 is a restaurant.
The houses are constructed of watershot coursed sandstone, although the ground floor of number 91 is now rendered and painted. They have stone slate roofs. Each house has a double-depth plan and is single fronted, however number 89 is significantly wider. The buildings are three storeys high with a one-plus-one window arrangement. A simple corbel table defines the roofline leading to a wooden gutter.
Number 89 has a doorway to the right with a plain surround, and one window on each floor to the left. The ground floor window is large and square, the first floor window is tall and vertical-rectangular, and the second floor window is small and square – all with raised sills, plain surrounds, and 20th-century small-paned glazing. Number 91 has a doorway to the left, with a rendered surround, and similarly shaped windows with altered glazing. A cut-down ridge chimney marks the junction of the two buildings. The rear of the property and interior have not been inspected. The gable wall of number 87 slightly overlaps the junction with number 89.
