Description
The retaining wall along the north and west sides of St Peter's churchyard in Burnley is a Grade II listed structure. It likely dates mostly from around 1807, when the churchyard was enlarged and properly enclosed, but it also includes earlier abutments built in 1736. The wall is constructed of coursed and random sandstone rubble topped with a rounded coping. It follows a curved line that aligns with the southward bend of the River Brun, extending from the Church Street Bridge at the northeast corner of the churchyard to the southwest corner. The height of the wall gradually decreases from approximately 10 meters near the bridge.
