Description
The market cross and stocks are located in the garden of Burnley College of Adult Education Centre. The base of the former market cross was erected around 1617, while the stocks are believed to have been constructed in the early 16th century. Both were originally situated in the former market place to the east of the Church of St Peter and were moved to this site around 1881. The base of the cross is made of gritstone and is octagonal in shape, featuring one step, a three-course plinth of large blocks, and a large moulded monolithic pedestal. The remains of the stocks are positioned close to the cross, utilizing its step as a seat. The stocks consist of two low jambs and a damaged two-part sill that is cut away in the center. The last recorded use of the stocks was in 1865.
