Description
The cross base and stocks are medieval and later structures made of gritstone, located on the north side of Clint Bank. The cross base features three steps topped by a square socket stone for a cross shaft, which is currently missing. The overall height of the cross base is approximately 1.5 metres. On the riser of the top step on the south side, there is a crudely cut inscription that reads 'PALLISER', and on the step below, it says 'THE TAILOR'. This refers to William Palliser, a former stonemason who had a shop in Parliament Street, Harrogate around 1890. Adjacent to the right are the stocks, which consist of two stone shafts that are approximately 1.2 metres high and slightly splayed at the bases, featuring grooves on their internal faces. A wooden rail with two leg holes has been inserted into the stocks since 1962.
