Description
The Bon-Accord Church, located on Rosemount Viaduct in Aberdeen, was designed by Alexander Ellis of Ellis and Wilson and built in 1896. It occupies a steeply inclined site and is a 3-storey building, rising to 4 storeys at the rear. The church is a broadly classical design, with a gabled form and asymmetrical towers flanking the main entrance.
The principal north elevation features a central 2-leaf timber panelled door, flanked by paired Corinthian pilasters supporting a projecting entablature that terminates in a blocked balustrade. Narrow, semi-circular arched windows are located in the flanking bays. Pilasters rise to gallery level, culminating in a tripartite, semicircular-arched window above. The gablehead includes a blind rectangular plaque with a projecting margin. Decorative swan neck scrolls flank a shouldered pediment on a plinth at the apex of the gable. To the outer left bay is an advanced, square-plan, 3-stage tower with arrowslit windows, a projecting cornice, an octagonal lantern, and an ogee cupola. To the outer right bay is a large, engaged, 5-stage, square-plan tower with arrowslit windows, oculi to the second stage, a projecting cornice to the third stage, a dentil-moulded cornice to the fourth stage, and a 5th stage belvedere with balustraded semicircular-arched openings terminating in a cupola.
The rear south elevation is a 3-storey gable end with irregular window placement. A blocked-in semicircular-arched window is centrally located on the third storey. The west side elevation has 6 bays with regular fenestration, with smaller windows on the middle storey. A projecting belltower is located to the outer right. The east side elevation mirrors the west, except that the outer bay to the right is obscured by an abutting building.
Most of the glazing is modern; however, some original timber frame sash and case windows remain on the east elevation. The roof is covered in grey slates with lead flashing, and cast-iron rainwater goods are present.
The interior has a rectangular plan, open nave and aisles, and symmetrical balustraded steps leading to a central, pedimented precentor's platform. A dado height of pitch pine panelling is present in the nave and aisles. A gallery is supported on cast-iron columns, with turned balusters to the balustrade. A segmental arch, supported on carved timber Corinthian pilasters, opens to an apse housing a large timber organ casement at gallery level. Original pine pews are found in both the gallery and nave. The roof features timber coffering, springers, and braces.
