Description
The former Swansea Grammar School is a tall three-storey building constructed from partly coursed rubble, featuring rusticated quoins and freestone dressings. It has corbelled eaves, a weathered string course, and window surrounds. The building has raised gable ends and a slate roof, with a tall chimney that has triple round stems over the east wall-head. The top floor features continuous rectangular openings and elaborate mullioned windows with paired lights and quatrefoils, all grouped under strainer-arches. On the east side, there is a one-storey extension with a pair of large oculi. The gable end includes a sexpartite rose window and round-headed windows on the ground floor. A narrow section of the former west range displays Romanesque detailing on the doorpiece and bipartite windows above.
Inside, the building retains fine Gothic stencilled detailing in the dormitory on the top floor, as well as in the dining room and kitchens on the ground floor, and the chapel in the basement. Additional features include diaphragm arches and hooded chimneys.
