Description
Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is a significant building featuring a low and wide symmetrical design, characterized by advanced pavilions and a pedimented structure. The facade is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings that are banded at the corners. The two-storey ends are accentuated by rusticated pilasters and Corinthian columns in antis that support an entablature adorned with dentilled pediments. The windows are recessed tripartite designs, with paired windows in the center, featuring small-pane glazing and swagged heraldic shields above the ground floor. The cills are set lower through a rusticated plinth.
The uniform five-bay center has a pitched glazed roof behind a blocking course, topped with a bold dentilled cornice. A frieze inscribed "MDCCCCIX" is present. The doorcase features an open and broken pediment, a decorative cartouche with cherubs, and a keyblock above the round-arched entrance, flanked by blocked columns with a triglyph frieze. The low area walls sweep upwards, leading to steps that access the double panelled door.
A modern extension added in 1974 to the left is not considered of special interest.
Inside, the gallery boasts a monumental top-lit entrance hall, which includes a balustraded gallery that is cantilevered on massive volutes and pilasters below. An imperial staircase with balustraded handrails is located to the center left, positioned under an archway that features a swagged cherubic keyblock. The ceiling is segmental arched and glazed, with massive volutes, panelled tympana, and a fine bracket cornice. The interior also includes timber doorcases with architraves, tablets on the friezes with cornices above, and panelled reveals, along with arched bays along the ground floor entrance wall.
