Description
The Swansea Working Men's Club & Institute is a tall, symmetrical building with three storeys and an attic, featuring a three-bay front facing Alexandra Road. It is constructed with pale stone dressings and red brick facings. The advanced central bay is topped with a segmental pediment that supports an elaborate dormer, which has a broken sinuous pediment and a finial. This dormer includes a bipartite window set against a curved and leaded platform roof adorned with ornamental ironwork. The outer dormers are also pedimented and integrated into a hipped slate roof. Notable architectural details include dentilled eaves, impost and cill bands, long-and-short quoins, and banded rustication on the lower storeys of the central bay.
The central bay features a tripartite window above a two-light traceried window on the first floor, with paired outer windows. All windows are round-headed and have keyblocked architraves, roll-moulded and fluted jambs, and carved roundels in the spandrels of the first floor. The central doorcase is framed by an entablature and part-fluted pilasters, with panelled doors leading up steps.
The long side elevation, which steps uphill in Quarry Street, has a similar architectural treatment. It features a pedimented frontispiece with an offset panelled chimney-stack to the dormer and a bipartite window above the doorway, along with a seven-bay elevation to the right.
