Description

Ebenezer Baptist Chapel is a Grade II* listed building featuring a fine three-bay neo-classical facade with a steep open pediment at the gable, which may have been influenced by the designs of C R Cockerell. The facade includes a giant vermiculated arch supported by a broken entablature on angle pilasters, adorned with egg-and-dart capitals, and features linking impost and cill-bands. The recessed center has an inscribed tablet above a stepped triple light with architraves and tracery, and a balustraded apron over the entablature leads to a tetrastyle Doric portico in antis. The side bays have bipartite windows with similar detailing.

To the left, there is a two-storey hall added in 1894, designed in a similar style, featuring three lights over four lights, with a central pilaster and a doorway that breaches the cill band. An attached house with a scrolled entrance to the Mission Hall is located at the rear, although it is not of special interest.

Inside the chapel, the spacious rectangular interior boasts a boarded and ribbed ceiling, with rich acanthus foliage decorating twin roses and groined coving above the street window. An excellent continuous gallery sweeps down below a Gothic organ-case at the north end, with a classical pulpit in front, pilasters, a modillion cornice, gold stencilling, and sinuous balustraded handrails leading to the platform, which features volute brackets at the reading desk. Tapering cast-iron columns with acanthus leaves and egg-and-dart capitals support the gallery. The interior also includes good panelled box pews and Greek wall tablets.
