Description

St. Matthew's Church is a Grade II listed building featuring a raised east gable with a moulded cornice and kneelers, topped with a Celtic cross. The structure is built of coursed rubble with freestone dressings. It has a quatrefoil above a round-headed arch that includes impost bands and an architrave. The east side showcases a stepped three-light window with distinctive colonnettes and fluted bands, which are adorned with volutes.

The south porch is polygonal with a hipped roof leading to a classical doorway, flanked by tall round arch windows with thin roll mouldings on the side elevations. There is a narrow gabled porch on the north side that rises above the eaves, constructed of coursed rubble with unbonded droved quoins. It features a tall round arch with long and short quoins and a blocked square-headed doorway filled with rubble. The gable apex has a quatrefoil and a blind tablet beneath it, along with round-arched bell openings on the upper sides.

The west gable has a bellcote with a pedimented and pilastered arch, featuring a giant arch treatment linked to an impost band. The west window is a five-light design with stepped lights, similar to the east window, and there is a lean-to porch with a heavy parapet below.

Inside, the nave is unaisled with an open boarded roof supported by tie beams and thin Gothic braces. The west end has a panelled gallery front with Corinthian cast-iron columns. The east end features a triple-arch treatment, with a tall chancel arch that has an architrave and square piers flanking the side arches.

The churchyard is enclosed by low walls along the street front, which include outer gateways with rusticated piers and segmental caps. Ironwork gates are present, along with an arched lantern bracket over the left-hand gateway.
