Description

The Palace Theatre is a tall three-storey Baroque building constructed of red brick with Bath stone dressings and slate roofs. At the stage end, there is a four-storey circular tower that currently lacks a dome, and the Bethesda front features square towers with curved pavilion roofs, rising to five storeys. The southeast angle has a top storey adorned with attached Ionic columns supporting aedicules, linked entablatures, and pedestals, all beneath a triglyph cornice with banded facings. The first and second floor corner windows are linked and sit under an open pediment, featuring a carved surround to an oculus, volute brackets, and a keyblock above a keyblocked and rusticated doorpiece.

The High Street elevation consists of 7.5 bays, topped with parapets over the main cornice that includes a triglyph frieze. It features giant Doric pilasters, banded on the outer bays, with ashlar facings surrounding linked window surrounds, pediments, and keyblocks. To the right, there is a swagged apron, and to the left, an oculus. The cornice sits over a banded ground floor that has rusticated arched window and door openings.

The nine-bay elevation facing Prince of Wales Road shares similar detailing, but includes a tower bay that is set back above an openwork parapet and topped with an urn.

The brick front on Bethesda Street features twin pavilions with Ionic pilasters, pediments, and ornamental French platform roofs.

Inside, the first-floor auditorium retains two steeply raked balconies that curve closely around the proscenium, which lacks stage boxes. The balcony fronts are designed as open ironwork balustrades, and the stage is small and wedge-shaped, with a modest proscenium.
