Description
Hafod Bridge is a triple portalled and pilastered structure built to carry the Swansea to Neath turnpike road. The bridge features a wider middle arch with a span of 5.70 metres, which crosses a tramroad and the old road to Llangyfelach. The eastern arch, spanning 3.30 metres, crosses the pre-canal Burlais tramroad, while the western arch, which is now blocked, once spanned a leat. The bridge has three semi-circular arches with flanking buttresses in the center. Originally, the arches measured 7 metres long, but they were extended to between 10 and 13 metres on the south side between 1852 and 1870. The stonework is laid in courses, with stone voussoirs on the north side, where the parapet was later built up in stone rubble during the 19th century. The south side features brick voussoirs for the 19th-century extensions.
