Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade II listed building featuring a plan with twin aisles leading to the nave and east end. It is constructed with snecked rubble facings and Bath stone dressings, topped with slate roofs. The east front displays parapeted gables adorned with cross-finials, flanked by slender buttresses (only the right gable has a finial), and features linked hoodmoulds, a cill band, and plinths, as well as 6 and 7-light traceried windows.
The north elevation consists of seven bays with buttresses connected by depressed super-arches, and Y-tracery windows in the central bays, along with a moulded doorway to the right. The southeast chapel has three bays and large 4-light Y-tracery windows.
The west front has twin gables and a canopied bell-cote supported by head corbels to the right. The doorway is framed in a pointed shape with a quatrefoil, and there are paired 4-light traceried windows with a central buttress to the left.
Inside, the church features an undivided chancel and nave, along with a south organ chamber/vestry and south aisle. The roofs are open collar-beam types with ornamental tie-rods, moulded purlins, and wind braces. There is a panelled arch over the polygonal chancel responds, and a five-bay arcade with polygonal columns and heavily-moulded 4-centred arches. The vestry has a panelled screen, and the windows include rere-arches and nook shafts. Notable furnishings include highly carved Gothic choir stalls.
