Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Joseph is a Grade II listed building featuring a plan with an apsidal chancel flanked by side chapels, a seven-bay aisled nave that includes a west chapel and baptistry, and a northwest polygonal tower topped with a spire. The church is designed in the Decorated style and has twin west porches.
The exterior is constructed with coursed bull-nosed masonry, complemented by Bath stone dressings and red Dumfries stone used for the nave piers and responds. The roof is modern pantile. The west front showcases a gable parapet with a finial, a small arched opening above a four-light Geometric traceried window, and flanking buttresses. The northwest turret features lancets and an openwork timber bellcote with a spirelet. The twin pointed doorways of the west porches are adorned with traceried tympana, and there is a figure of St Joseph in a tabernacle.
The clerestory is buttressed and includes three-light traceried windows, while the southwest baptistry has an outer gable with a lower traceried clerestory and a three-light east window under a corbelled gable with a finial. The southeast side has a wheel window and headstops on the overlapping chapel.
The churchyard is enclosed and contains a tall Celtic Cross War Memorial from 1919 at the west end. A presbytery is attached to the east end of the church.
