Description

The Miners Welfare Hall is a large, single-storey building constructed from red brick with imitation-stone terracotta dressings and a slate hipped roof featuring two ridge ventilators. The southeast end facade is prominent, with a central projection flanked by two panelled brick piers that support two finely detailed fluted Corinthian columns in antis. The center features a long aedicule window with metal glazing bars, surrounded by a moulded frame, a pediment on consoles, and a moulded sill that is slightly raised from the brickwork. Below the window, there is a broad two-step band spanning the full width of the opening, which now has altered doors but retains the original outer pilasters. Historical photographs indicate the presence of a metal illuminated canopy.

The main entablature is finely detailed, with a frieze that includes long outer panels and seven square center panels, the outer panels adorned with rosettes and the inner three recessed with small tilting lights. A large cornice and a slightly ridged blocking course complete the top. Behind this, there is a hipped projection from the roofslope.

The side elevations are very long, with the plinth, brick frieze, and eaves band continuing around the building. The center of each side is recessed, featuring an imitation stone frieze with five sets of 1-3-1 recessed small square lights above five large further-recessed panels. The outer panels contain doorways framed in plain imitation stone, with octagonal brick-framed ventilators above. The outermost bays have oval lights framed in imitation stone, positioned above long openings also framed in imitation stone.

Inside, an inserted ceiling is present, but a deep balcony remains intact. From the balcony level, some plasterwork on the pilasters and broad bands of the shallow-curved ceiling can be seen. Additionally, some plaster decoration remains in the first-floor foyer, including pilasters and moulded arches.
