Description

The Midland Bank is a Grade II* listed building constructed from Portland stone with yellow brick facings. It stands three storeys high with a basement and features a symmetrical five-bay facade, where the end bays are emphasized. The building showcases banded rustication and has a curved corner treatment topped with an openwork dome inspired by Lutyens.

The design includes a concave balustraded parapet above a convex entablature supported by giant Ionic pilasters. There is an oculus framed in a Baroque style at the second floor, and a concave parapet over a Doric entablature that leads to an arched corner entrance, which features a swagged doorcase and a lunette above. The emphasized ends facing Castle Square have open pediments, while the second-floor windows are adorned with keyblocked arches and carved tympana. These windows are vertically linked to heavily-framed first-floor windows that have sinuous balconies. The central bays are supported by panelled pilasters that hold up the main cornice with balustrading. The upper floor features three-light windows with blocked columns, and the ground floor has cavetto splays with arched and keyblocked designs. The left bay has an aedicule treatment under the oculus, while the right bay has an Ionic doorpiece. The cross-frames of the windows mostly contain small-pane glazing.

The flank elevation has a simpler design, with square-headed openings on the upper floors and arched openings on the ground floor.

Inside, the ground-floor interiors are finely detailed, including a circular vestibule with Ionic columns. The banking hall features a coffered ceiling with a central circular lantern, fluted Ionic columns, pilastered woodwork, panelled dados, and pedimented doorcases, although there are modern bandit screens present.
