Description
Barclays Bank is a building from the 1920s featuring a three-storey classical façade. The ground floor is made of polished dark granite, while the upper floors are constructed from Portland stone. The building has five bays with advanced ends and solid parapets that include swagged tablets on the outer bays and balustrading in the centre. A deep dentil cornice and a plain frieze are supported by banded pilasters, with an enriched Ionic portico in antis at the centre. The upper windows are architraved and keyblocked, linked vertically by panelled aprons adorned with husk decoration, and feature pediments on the outer first-floor windows; the upper sashes have glazing bars. The high rusticated ground floor has a wide frieze with arched openings, including a large keyblocked entry on the left, which is complemented by ironwork gates and a lettered tympanum. The interior includes a modernised panelled banking hall.
