Description
Barclay's Bank is an early 20th-century building designed in a Classical style. It stands three storeys tall with an attic hidden behind a parapet, constructed from Portland stone with a channelled ground floor set on a grey granite plinth. The ground floor features a grey granite Doric portal at the entrance on Commercial Street, accompanied by a single window to the right, two windows at the corner, and six windows facing Corn Street. The first and second floors are distinguished by a giant order of Ionic pilasters. There is a curving corner bay with two windows, followed by two additional windows on Corn Street. Beyond this, there is a recessed section with four bays supported by free-standing Ionic columns, with two windows in each bay, plus two more windows beyond that. The east elevation initially continues in the same style but transitions to a simpler design in yellow brick.
Inside, the banking hall also reflects the Classical style, featuring Roman Doric pillars and columns, with a ceiling that includes deep recesses adorned with Doric detailing.
